The little Scholastic books that altered me forever. Part One.

One of the few parts of school I liked was ordering books from the Weekly Reader. This was my most treasured volume and is actually the second copy of this book I owned. My first copy became completely tattered and even at that age I felt the need to replace it. Awesome illustrations by Norman Bridwell.
If you'd like to peek inside this and look at more books --

I was showing this book to my friend and we both thought that Used Monsters would be a cool name for a band. The chaotic Kovacsian concept only went as far as my username here on LJ.

The director of Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things wrote and illustrated beautifully this cool kid's book.

My classic horror education began here.

My initial experimenting in special effects sprang from this.

This and Funny Magic were the books that added to the illusions.

More Scholastic Books here!

OMG! I have that book!

My mom got it for me at some book sale, when I was in my teens; she knew it was for littler kids, but just thought I would appreciate it, which I did. It must be in my attic, back in Pennsylvania.

It's such a groovy book. It really sparked my imagination in those pre-teen years. I wanted so badly to visit a used monsters lot.

That "How to Care for Your Monster" one is priceless. I never saw that one ever before.

Maybe they could bring it back into print somehow...

Of course, I've always had some notion to write some sort of "guide to monsters" book, but there's already a bunch of them out there...

Your cartooning style would fit nicely with the "monsters guide book" concept. Go for it! Help keep those classic monsters alive! ALIVE!

Secret origins time! Ah, but who's to say how far the concept really went? What's a "real" musical entity? And what's not?

Speaking of "reality," Alan Abel has finally materialized!
